Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free…
Missouri Republican Senator Bob Dixon is absolutely SICK of hearing people talk about Liberty.
From the Missouri Times:
“I’ve heard enough about people’s liberty being taken away,” Dixon said. “I am tired of hearing these arguments over and over again; they just don’t hold any water for me.”
Since this is Easter weekend I thought I would provide the Senator with some Bible verses to take his mind off all of the annoying talk of freedom and Liberty.
I will start with two quotes that are NOT from the Bible.
Of great importance to the public is the preservation of this personal liberty; for if once it were left in the power of any the highest magistrate to imprison arbitrarily whomever he or his officers thought proper, (as in France it is daily practiced by the crown,) there would soon be an end of all other rights and immunities. Some have thought that unjust attacks, even upon life or property, at the arbitrary will of the magistrate, are less dangerous to the commonwealth than such as are made upon the personal liberty of the subject. To bereave a man of life, or by violence to confiscate his estate, without accusation or trial, would be so gross and notorious an act of despotism, as must at once convey the alarm of tyranny throughout the whole kingdom; but confinement of the person, by secretly hurrying him to jail, where his sufferings are unknown or forgotten, is a less public, a less striking, and therefore a more dangerous engine of arbitrary government.
-William Blackstone
The debt of democracy to Christianity has always been underestimated…. Long centuries before Rousseau was ever heard of, or Locke or Hobbs (sic), the fundamental principles of democracy were plainly stated in the New Testament, and elaborately expounded by the early fathers, including St. Augustine.
-HL Mencken
Now the Lord is the spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.
-2 Corinthians 3:17
And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
-John 8:32
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
-Galatians 5:1
That the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
-Romans 8:21
You recently repented and did what was right in my eyes by proclaiming liberty, each to his neighbor, and you made a covenant before me in the house that is called by my name, but then you turned around and profaned my name when each of you took back his male and female slaves, whom you had set free according to their desire, and you brought them into subjection to be your slaves. “Therefore, thus says the Lord: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; behold, I proclaim to you liberty to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, declares the Lord. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
-Jeremiah 34:15-17
But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
-James 1:25
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
-Isaiah 61:1
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
-John 8:36
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
-Galatians 5:13
So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty.
-James 2:12
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised
-Luke 4:18
